Urban Planning at Georgetown
Reported by webmaster@ipsd.org on 10/30/09
Throughout their recent social studies unit, third grade students studied the three different types of communities that people reside in. The main focus of the study was on how people live and work together in the environment that surrounds them.
As an extension of the study, the third grade teachers assigned the students an “Urban Project” that was completed at home. Each child had to create a replica of a building that one might find in an urban city. Even though students were given a list of potential topics, they were free to choose their own or make their own creation. The boys and girls then “built” an urban building and then presented it to their classmates, along with an explanation of what the building was used for and what materials were used.
The buildings look fantastic, and the urban city is now on display in the LMC. A few examples are available here for your viewing, but the children would love it if you stopped by one day to see them all!
